I heard on the news this morning how anti-crime agencies are again pleading to shop owners to cut out sale of replica toy guns because these can be used in crimes.
One spokesperson said on the radio that for shop owners to sell such toys in SA it’s irresponsible. Traditionally this plea would come from groups (including schools) that say that sale of these toys encourage violent behavior in kids.
The more difficult thing to do, in my view, would be for the right values to be taught or rather transferred at home.
I hope to one day train my kids in the right way so much that when they go outside and see the toy guns and the stuff on tv and such that they’ll be able to know how to choose the right thing even when I’m not there. I know this has offensive implications to parents but that’s not what I’m trying to say. i can never comprehend the patience & grace parents must have to do the millions of things they do for kids, parents deserve honour & respect period.
I just feel people are species of values – we do everything based on what we value. You can tell from someone’s actions if they don’t value life, so it doesn’t matter what external blockages we place for that person, they’ll always act out from their value system. This is why in fact parenting is a daunting task when I think about it & I respect parents.
We can’t rely on tv, schools and the government to change people’s values. An elected government will always do what the loudest people in the country say it must. But, change first the values of people then toy guns factories, porn companies & drug lords will be out of business because no one will want those products.
