It’s DIY time again

My fingers are itching to build something again.

After getting into building my own camera rigs last year I think it’s time I built something new.

What I wanna build this time:

This is called a doorway dolly and it’s used to get smooth camera movement when recording videos.

You might remember that I built a dolly last year already. The difference here is that this version is more stable due to the human weight (when you sit on it).

On my current one I have to move the rig while trying to see what I’m filming at the same time which a lot of times can be disastrous.

I often get asks: “when do you think of these things?” Well, how it happens is:

1. I generally watch a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ and ‘making of’ footage and in the back of my mind is this dream to make full scale movies and documentaries.
2. I then Google the rigs they use in films and TV.
3. Then I Google for DIY versions
4. Then my brain says: “Wow I wonder what that would look like if I used that myself and shot videos with it?!” or ”“Hmm I’m sure I can build that for cheap?”

My first dolly (sitting on the white ‘train tracks’) used for the bible school advert video shoot.

It’s that “I wonder if..” statement that gets me to try out things because somewhere in my brain my “that’s impossible” brain cells are either dead or not there lol! Thank you Jesus for killing or taking them away.

Anyway, so I’ve mentally plotted exactly what I’ll need from the hardware to build this. The biggest investment will be to buy 4 skateboards so I can get the necessary 16 wheels! But, if I’m going to make decent films I’m going to need to make sacrifices to achieve excellence so here we go again…

Last year’s post on the first dolly I built, here.
